Hello This is a blog about my 5 month old golden retreiver Bojangles or Bo for short. My husband and I got Bo for his father as a fathers day gift. With in the first few days of there care Bo ended up with a broken front left leg. They did not take him to the vet and by the time we came 3 weeks later and took it upon ourselves to take him to the vet the out look was not good. We decided to keep him since it’s beyond us how such a young dog would get such a serious injury and then they just watched him limp around on a clearly broken leg for 3 weeks! They had named him Sunny but we decided a new home a loving family and a new name so he has become Bojangles. We took him to Edmonton for surgery hoping to save the leg butwice in the there the vet said amputation was his best bet for a long happy pain free life. My husband and I feel so much guilt having given the poor baby to them. We are doing everything we can to make sure he has the best possible life with us! Our children adore him and he has been inseparation to our family with everything he has been through he is still the sweetest most loving animal I’ve ever had the privilege of having join my family!! We got him his ruffwear harness although I must admit I’m having a hard time adjusting it to fit him properly. I worry lots about him and what would happen if he developed cancer or hurt another leg he is after all still so young and what happened to Bo could of been simply avoided by proper treatment and vet care in the first place! Both our regular vet and the surgon made it very clear had he been seen sooner he would not have lost the leg. But I guess I can’t live in the past and can only do what is best for Bo now! Hoping to learn much more about proper care forour little boy we got him the joint food and supplements like the vet told us and as I said have the ruffwear harness.
Welcome and thanks for sharing Bo’s story. Be sute to title your future posts or the Tripawds community will not be notified of your updates.
Many members have found the book Without Regret helpful in coping with the human emotions you’re feeling. It was the first book we read after Jerry’s amputation.
Welcome to you and Bo. I’m sorry he had a rough start, but thankfully he is with your loving family now!
Try to not worry too much about what might happen. Of course, you need to be sure he doesn’t overdo it and hurt himself, but try not to think “What if he gets cancer?” That worrying will only rob you of spending happy time with your boy!
We’d love to see pictures of him!

I know how silly it is to worry about cancer and stuff but when his amputation first happened I started reading and I never realized how many dogs loose a leg to cancer and all the people and vets say dogs were born with a spare leg but Bo lost his so early I am totally parinoid now his spare is gone…it’s been a lot to deal with and so much information and facts at once it’s hard not to worry. I’ll post pics of Bojangles as soon as I can.
Thanx I’ve never wrote on a blog before so I’m a little unsure if I’m doing it right. I’ll have to get that book for my husband and myself
Thank you for sharing Bo’s story. We’d love to see some pictures!
Try to let go of the regrets. Bo isn’t worried about it. He is too busy enjoying life now.
There are lots of resources on this website, including how to keep Bo in tip top condition. And if we can offer any insight from our experiences we would be more than happy to help.

We went though the same thoughts with Kayla she was only 3months when she lost her front leg too. For the first few months you are constantley worrying but you soon realise that you are worrying about nothing and in time those thoughts do ease. Kayla is now just about 1yr and its not something that is on my mind anymore (unless she does something utterly ridiculous that would be difficult for a dog with 4 legs!!)
Good luck
Sarah
Good luck to Bo, now and into his long and loving future. Thank you for going the extra mile for him. He is definitely in the right hands now. It is hard not to rethink the past, we all do it. And it is true what they say… dogs have 3 legs and a spare! Our dog is living proof! You can read his blog at http://superdog.tripawds.com/
Hang in there!
